Why can't Mojang just ask if you want to update Minecraft? They know most of the important server plugins don't work when versions change, so everyone playing multiplayer is essentially screwed every time a version comes out.

I do like that the admins post stuff on this forum's front page saying not to update, but I don't think to check this forum before I log in every time just in case an update has occurred.

Erm, they do? Download the latest minecraft.exe client, and it'll ask you if you want to update. :)

Ive tried several clean installs and the new client still doesnt work on my computer. tried both the regular windows one and the .jar. I still get that old "cannot connect to minecraft.net" so im forced to use the old client that doesnt ask to update. My solution, with every stable build the server runs on, I backup my .minecraft just in case.

Awww, that's lame Marine. :( How do you prevent it from updating then?

BTW, the main difference between the clients is that the new client uses HTTPS instead of HTTP to communicate with the authentication servers. You might check around and see if you can figure out why the HTTPS communications are being blocked.

When you update to 1.5 copy the version file from /.minecraft/bin/
Restore 1.4, and paste the version file into the 1.4 setup. Minecraft will no longer auto update to 1.5.
