Throw out some ideas for competitive MP gameplay in Minecraft! Below are a couple I had...
Diggin' for the Gold
4 players
Teams of two players. Both teams start out on a fresh map, with no inventory. The teams must find, mine, and smelt enough gold to make one gold block. Whichever team returns to spawn and places a completed gold block first wins. Two moderators would be present to monitor each team's progress, to ensure that the teams actually find the 9 ore blocks, and do not use glitches/hacks to create the gold illegitimately.
Minecraft Spleefing
2 to 16 players
Ok, not my idea, but this one has been around since the game began. Rules are pretty simple... Both players start on a platform in the sky. Both players use whatever actions necessary (but mainly removal of blocks) to get the other player to fall off. Platforms can vary in size and shape, but are generally flat and 1 block thick. Last player still on the platform wins the spleef.
Sand Castles
2 to 6 players
Each individual or team must build a climbable sandcastle made entirely of sand up to a specified, predetermined height. They start with no inventory, and must harvest the sand themselves. The first individual/team to complete their castle wins, provided a moderator can climb from the bottom to top without removing or adding any blocks, and nothing but sand has been used to construct the structure.
Antiflood
2 Teams of ???
A torch is placed at the bottom of a natural cave. There is an attacking team, and a defending team. The attacking team's goal is to put out the torch with water as quickly as possible. The defending team's goal is to make sure the torch isn't put out by water! The attacking team must be able to see the location of the torch before the round starts. Both teams start out with a single iron pickax, but no other materials. The cave should be pre-lit with torches high up on the ceiling, to avoid them being touched by water. Dropping and retrieving a pickax to refresh its health is allowed, as monitoring this would be too difficult.
A cave near a natural source of water should be located for this competition. The cave should also be somewhat steep, to ensure it is not too difficult for the attaching team. At least one moderator should be present with a stop watch at the bottom of the cave, watching the torch. Two rounds are played, with the teams switching sides after each round, and repairs being made to the cave to make it as it was the first round (or a map backup before the first round, and reload before the second round). There are many strategies that could be employed here, including the defending team putting up walls or carving out moats around the torch to prevent water from reaching it, etc. Buckets are not allowed, but could be employed in future versions of the competition, once bucket water flows properly.
Tunnelflood
2 Players
This is a rather simple competition. Two players start with a blank inventory on an island with at least two trees, with the goal of completing an underwater tunnel to a nearby island before the other player. The first player to complete their tunnel, with above-water exits on both ends and no flooding in their tunnel, wins.
Any other game/competition ideas? Something employing redstone circuits would be fun, but only once they are fixed to work 100% in MP.
