Endless Plague of Temp Maps

Minecraft is a huge time suck, but it's gotten boring for me lately. Every time there's a major update, I want to play this game. But I can't, because every time there's an update, we're on a temp map where anything I do will be void in a couple of days. By the time the regular map is up, I've already lost interest again. So I see no point in playing, so I shelve minecraft once more. Rinse, repeat. I'm tired of every little client update that changes the sound a creeper makes breaking heyo and every other server plugin, making us rollover to a temporary map until further notice.

Now, I don't know how the server software works, but after updates like this, what's the major problem with letting the maps run without our plugins for a few days?

without a hey0 update. the server doesnt have user groups(vips, moderators. etc) , any slash commands(/home /spawn /ban etc.) or cube creation history(who made the tnt that blew your entire home into dust, who stole ur diamond statue, etc) and other hey0 functions. The only person who can ban someone currently is sgt because he has access to teh physical server(correct me if im wrong), so any hackers planting massive TNT or lava or FIRES would run around for a while before getting banned.

so teh only result from playing without the server mods would be a scarred and disfigured map (have u seen teh temp maps spawn area? nothing but creeper holes to fall in while getting chansed by a laggy spider or zombie)along with server wide grief, which would result in guess what? the map going to a backup, which would clear anything you had done since then.

I'm going to have to agree with French. Why can't we just stick to old versions until the new version plugins are working?

French - we can't run on the normal maps, or they'd be griefed to heck and back, without us being able to do much about it. Spawn protection would be gone. Warping would be gone. Reserved list would be gone.

Now I COULD run the old version of the server, as lordi suggested, but *most* people who play minecraft aren't technical enough to be able to run the old version of the client. We were seeing 5-6, sometimes up to 10 players on the server with running the old server files during the beta screwup, but as soon as the beta version was fixed and we moved to the latest n greatest, we were seeing full servers most of the time. Full servers are good - they bring in new players and new donations. If we stick with the old client, new players won't bother to downgrade to an old client to check us out.

Hopefully, Notch implements his new upgrade schema, where he'll have nightly builds and stability testing for the brave, but stable release candidates along the way. We'd probably see temp maps on the server for a much shorter period of time.

Hope that makes sense?

Alright, that clears things up for me.

What I'm basically getting is that it happens from circumstances that we have no choice but to deal with. Hopefully the nightly builds thing will let modders get a headstart on updating their mods.

But probably not.

Yeah It does get annoying slightly, but I think there's not really a better option. Tend to play on other games, servers, and single player during updates. And single is really fun, I also get to play with my brother on minecraft sometimes which is great fun :D

Part of the problem is our HUGE reliance on mods that are built for free, in people's spare time. Nothing much we can do about that, since we all like the mods and Notch's vanilla implementation frankly sucks for administrative purposes. So, for now, we just have to rely on people's spare time.

Another thing to keep in mind is, it should get better down the road, once the game is out of beta and is just updated for minor bug fixes or content update. I'm sure we still have several months of beta before the game is officially completed, but just keep reminding yourself that there IS light at the end of the tunnel. ;)

Whilst you can spend hours on forums and online raging to other players about who much you hate minecraft because of the updates, I myself like to take solace in the fact that the game is in fact very epical, due to the fact it is so good for what it is. Remember you did buy the game in alpha (or beta whatever) and you can't expect it not to have any bugs at all, and it wasn't a great ammount of money that you spent anyway. And as SgtSpike simply said, you can't exactly complain or try to get a refund for poor quality from something that was free.
