There obviously isn't a great way to trade items in minecraft, so first and foremost, only trade with another player you trust!

Generally, trades should be done for gold bars. It'll be the easiest currency to use, and that way we won't have a lot of obscure wanted ads that never get finished because both sides can't agree on a currency.

That said, here are some very GENERAL gold bar currency rates. These are simply my opinion, based on the availability and rarity of certain items. You can ask for however much/little you'd like in your for sale or wanted ads.

1 Diamond = 3 Gold Bars
64 Clay = 2 Gold Bars
64 Coal = 1 Gold Bar
16 Reeds = 1 Gold Bar
16 Cactus = 1 Gold Bar
32 Saplings = 1 Gold Bar

What is there to even do with the gold bars once we have them? I mean, there's armor and tools, but not much else to do with it, right?

They're just rare, and a show of wealth... kind of like the real world. :)

I think Notch has exactly this in mind for gold: being a currency. Gold isn't used for anything, really. You can make tools and armor yes, but those are very weak. So I think it's a good idea to use gold as a valuta :).

Redstone is really too common to be valuable. Anyone with an hour and a pickaxe can have pretty much as much as they need.

The going currency for redstone seems to be 8 iron for a stack of redstone

so... 1/2 gold for a stack?
