How to renew your picks/shovels/axes/etc

This is the ONE server-approved MP glitch you may use. We only allow it because it would be impossible to moderate, and people might accidentally drop their items anyway.

If your pick/shovel/ax is running low on health, push Q while it is selected to drop it, walk over top of it to pick it back up, and it will be at full health. :D

Wow. What's the general community feeling on this one? Should we suck it up and start blowing through our diamond supplies, or is this worthy of a mod to "fix" it back to the way it was?

Maybe I have temporary reading-blindness, but I cannot find this in Notch's last blog entry "Bug fixing made fun".

If you refer to "Swords and other weapons now deal damage properly", that means something different. Until now, according to Socrates, everything (incl. weapons) deals 1 point damage. I believe that this update will make a diamond sword hit like a diamond sword.

Anyway:

Once that bug is fixed (which it eventually will be), we should try to live with it for a while, and then we should decide if we want a mod for that: One that for example just quadruples the standard tool duration. Something like that. If one diamond pickax holds long enough to ensure that you find more than 3 more diamonds (on average), that would be cool.

I know, we could use stone pickaxes instead. I have played Single Player excessively like that. But I think Multiplayer is "faster", so to speak, and to creep along on stone pickax feet, that's not fitting imho. And anyway, I think that you even don't find enough diamonds in Single Player, if you think what you can do with them and that a diamond pickax is near useless (except for obsidian) since you can't use it more broadly because you have to save on diamonds. Additionally, I think it would be sad it you'd have to power-mine instead of being more casual about it (without the parallel corridors etc). I always use the parallel method, but it makes that part of the game boring and tedious. Homework: Find diamonds. Meh. Also, the world is the size of EARTH (Surface.), somehow it doesn't feel right to squeeze one spot dry of every possible resource instead of being a bit more dancy about it.

In short: I think the duration you can use all tools should be quadrupled. Or the amount of diamonds in the world should be quadrupled. But the hoe dies too quickly, too, so I'd go with 4x tool duration. In single and multi player.

Since we claim to have a "legit build" server, then we would have to follow along with the new rules of breaking tools. The only reason that tool-renewal-via-dropping has been allowed thus far is that it would be impossible to moderate.

Better stock up on your diamonds now folks! Rough times ahead, and I see many blocks of gold being traded for a handful of diamonds... :D

In a hardcore survival server, running out of diamond is part of the game. Fall back to iron or stone and keep going.

But on a creative server you're not necessarily going to be power-mining at diamond depth levels. It's easy to get lots of diamond if that's all you do when you play, but I don't know if everybody wants to power mine nonstop. I've would have gone through many dozens of diamond picks just leveling mountain tops or collecting cobble for construction projects. You never find diamonds doing that kind of work.

Totally agree. That said, I've never really played creative mode. I'm no Picasso, I just enjoy hiding in holes. But glad to know that my stockpiling is the right way to go, save those diamonds for when I need them :)

Handsome.
If that has indeed been fixed, when the next server reset happens, we shouldn't transfer inventories. All the items were gained with that advantage. I can tell you this right now, with strip mining in single player, I don't accumulate NEARLY the diamonds because strip mining requires you constantly remake tools. Even using iron tools usually leads to you blowing more iron than you find to keep up the flow, so you typically mine with stone and use your iron to knock out the power blocks (gold, diamonds, redstone).

I'm not saying reset now, as the projected day is somewhere in february... but I do feel that this needs to be considered come reset time. Otherwise, I'm going to be a Minecraft god with my 30 blocks of diamond. :D

It hasn't been fixed, so I guess we don't have to worry about that for now... ;) I do kind of agree though - inventories would look a lot different if items didn't wear!

Wow I never knew this, I usually take about 15 stone picks with me and an iron/diamond pick for the good stuff when i go mining. Thanks for the heads up!

Don't strip. Branch and drift at depth levels 11 to 16. There are some threads on the main minecraft forums that discuss optimum geometry.

Ooops lol. I read that it was fixed on his Get Satisfaction page in the solved section lol. I had been trying to keep an eye on the progress of the Ghost Bug may it dwell in hell lol

Annoying 13 year old.
It has been patched, I tried it and it's still at the same damage.
It's a shame. But you'll have to be cautious if you wanna use the diamond now.
