Lava Grief

I logged in at 11:10 CST to find the wood floors of my house in flames and lava running down my staircase and into my mine. I don't know who did this and I have suspicions but I need help tracking down the person who did this and some other damage to New Rome. I got help fixing the place back up. Thanks to Neodaitu and l337phreak for their help. I was upset to find that Diamond and gold were taken from my chests because they were reset today and that NO MODERATORS WERE ONLINE ALL DAY! No moderators means little can be done for griefing and my house was demolished because of lack of administration.

Yes, griefing is frustrating. But you have to remember that the game is still in alpha, the updates tend to break things, and for those two reasons, you can't rely on ANYTHING. Your best bet is to have backups, especially for things like diamond and gold, if you're going to store them in a chest. Personally, I always store that in my character's inventory, as I know it won't get lost or stolen that way. I still don't trust chests.

Anyway, if you still want to store important items in chests, use both chest protect and hiding your chest. Put it beneath a floor, hide it behind a wall, but do something besides leave it out in the open!

As far as no mods being on... well, that happens. I don't like to see it happen, and I'd love to see more of the mods on more often, but I can't tell them when to get on and when to not. If we still have issues with no mods being on, I'll have to start recruiting more and release those that aren't on very much.

And the always classic response... "Build further from spawn!" ;)

Gotta agree with Spike, chests are a dangerous way to store valuables even when they aren't being raided by other people. I always convert my gold and diamond to blocks and store in inventory. As far as the lack of mods, today was really an exception. I can't remember another day that the moderators were around so little, so I don't think I'd worry to much about this being a long term problem.

Sucks about the griefing though, sorry to hear it. :(

I'm over it. It just upset me that New Rome which might I add is 10-15 min from spawn go specificly attacked during the rare occasion of mods not being online. Seemed too well planned to be honest lol, but whatever and stuff. I fixed my house. recovered most of my stuff. all is good lol. just kinda like to know who did it.

Just a note that I was on quite alot yesterday, but unfortunately most of the mods come on at a similar-ish time. In the early hours of GMT (4am to 7am) seems to be when most of the griefing is done.
Sucks that it happened but minecraft is a very hard game to moderate some of the time, and we are looking into mod-based improvements to help improve the situation.

Honestly we need McAdmin back. Ever since we switched and couldn't item banning it's been easier to place lava and such.

actually, its a 9 min walk, we originally were going to make it alot longer but we got tired of building the road and found a great place for a city!
the road doasent stop some grievers, and its quite annoying how all the torches on the road got moved around, I hope there would be a surveillance camera mod! (anyone?)

9 minutes isn't very far for most griefers. Cities need to be at least half an hour way for them to be 99% random grief proof.

It also might be worth mentioning that people who live in new rome don't exactly keep it a secret - I always see people inviting randomers who just joined the game to come look at New Rome. Could be a major factor in why it is getting griefed.
