New community project? New community project!

I'd like to see what interest there is in a community-wide effort to build a large replica of some place (could be fantasy based or real-world). There have been other projects to build the Lord of the Rings world or Game of Thrones cities that are just awesome and amazing. I started the University of Oregon project with the hopes of getting the whole community involved but I think that it isn't really special enough to get everyone involved, and I didn't end up having the time I really needed to lead the project properly.

BUT, if we can find something that a large part of the community would enjoy building together, as well as some good leadership to head up the project, I think it would make for a lot of fun to work on and also could be a major attraction/feature of our server.

So, now that I've thrown that out there, what ideas do you have?

The city in the clouds from Bioshock Infinite (I'm assuming flight would be enabled like it was in city builder).

Disneyland would be a good choice, it's well known and I bet we could really pull-off recreating some of the rides. If we finish it all the better, we could have a theme park! :D
Actually, this is a good thought. Once the buildings are mostly done, putting in some working rides (at least some of them) would be pretty cool. Maybe not ALL the buildings, maybe go zone by zone or something.

oh my goodness! I never even considered how big that thought could become!!! How awesome would working rides be??

A server wide project AND a working theme park!

There's not a suggestions section on discord, so lots of talking has been done on disneyland. Here is a list of thoughts I have compiled from the conversation:

1. We could do both disneyland and downtown disney.
2. Once it is all completed, players can use the shop space as actual shops.
a. This is a "once completed" because then inventory share with build and survival could be implemented so shops would serve a purpose and it would no longer be free build creative as it would be completed.
b. This would also be a world with a shop plugin.
3. If we also add functional roller coasters, that could be good.

Do you want to make an occurate Disney Land ? If yes which one ?

Or maybe our Disney Land ? with all the areas and buildings but with some freedom in the making ? I can imagine all Disney parks don't look exactly the same, so maybe we could imagine a "new" park.

I think it would be better to replicate the real-life one to make it interesting to outsiders. Maybe we could have a short path to an extension area with our own custom creations too though. But really the focus at first should be on the real park.

I'd say Florida's Disneyland would be best, since it could be expanded into Disney World if we wanted.

The one problem with Disneyland is that it has been done before, there are at least a handful of Disneyland Minecraft servers out there. If we can find something unique that no one has done before, it would be even better. But I can't help but love the idea anyway. :)

Yeah, I was just going to bring this up. It's been done, and well. Rides and everything.
I should have done that search before even suggesting it.

All we have to do is come up with something really interesting that nobody has thought to do before.
How hard can that be?

There is ONE build I really wanted to do when I was playing a lot, and according to MajorWumpus' signature I'm surprised he didn't think about it. I kind of want to keep this idea for myself but I'm pretty sure I will never take the time to do it. So... Here it is : the DISCWORLD !!! Huge scale ! There's maps and all to help us, but still a lot of freedom in the making.

I would say it needs a empty map, no floor, with a dark space skybox.

All you can find about it on Minecraft is kinda small and/or ugly.

If we don't do the turtle too big we can have a big disc. In the books you really have to leave the disc to see the turtle, she's not as huge as this one on the picture.

Or we just do Ankh Morpork :)

Wow, and I thought Disneyland was ambitious.
Huge is not adequate to describe such an endeavor.

I dont dislike this idea. As you guessed I'm quite fond of the source material.
And as you said, there are maps a plenty and quite detailed descriptions of much of it.
There are so many different settings to work with...

How many people on here are familiar with (or would be willing to become familiar with) Discworld?
