Offensive name

Hi, just recently came across someone called nazibird. I happen to have a real problem with the term Nazi, what with all their war crimes and racial policies and the like. I'd just like to make a complaint about the offensive name.

This topic was discussed yesterday with Spike and myself and other mods. We came to conclusion that the majority of players were fine with the name, however borderline. Granted it is a grey area name. If you have a serious issue with this, you need to PM either myself or Spike and give us your reasoning. "A real problem" does not neccessarily give us a compelling reason to try to do something about it.

While I know to avoid posting in here unless I am bringing forward evidence, I feel it necessary to point out that there needs to be a rule made about this. I've seen plenty of people with "offensive" names, and many are cool people who simply used that name either as a joke, or because they did not expect to play online. I myself would have used a different name had I known I would be playing online. While I realize we cannot approach someone without a preconception because of their name, I recommend they be given the same treatment as anyone else. While I definitely see why some are offended, wasn't it once said to keep philosophical/political/theological/or religious matters out of the game, as they create gray areas?

If anything, people with such "offensive" names should be simply kept on a shorter leash regarding cursing.

Unfortunately, not everything can be unabiguified (not a word, but I'm using it anyway) to the point of having a black and white rule for it. Some things must be taken on a case-to-case basis. Currently, any player names with swear words in them are banned immediately, and any other players (such as nazibird) are discussed on a case-to-case basis.

I know we have a no-swastika rule on the server, but that's mainly because Minecraft was so permeated with people who wanted to make them all over the place. People thought swastikas were "cool", and in my mind, that's a bit wrong. There was nothing cool about the Nazi regime or what they stood for.

A name that someone cannot change, we're a bit less strict on, because they cannot change it. Because of this, I will not be banning nazibird or telling him he cannot play on our server. If anyone has a major problem (and is actually serious about it) with the name, then please PM me with details on why exactly you have a major problem with it.

And what of the player MothaF****? When he did play, he was quite cool, and even mentioned if he could he would change his name. He seriously regretted choosing the name, and asked several times if he would get in trouble. It seems in THAT case, he does not deserve to be banned just for his name. I understand what you mean Spike, and that as more of what I was getting at. A case by case basis is the best that can be done, but people that are not latently offensive in the chat shouldn't be banned just for their names.

There's definitely discretion to be used in all cases, and may be exceptions to the rules. I'm not familiar with the case of MothaF, but probably something we should deal with. He probably doesn't deserve to be banned, but I do need to keep a clean environment in the server since we advertise it that way.

I agree with Spike, sure he probably didn't do anything wrong, but we got to keep the server clean for younger Minecrafters that wish too play. It's goes along with the swearing rule, it's intended for the younger children of the server.

Nz, you speak out of ignorance. Nazibird has been nothing but good to this server. I poke fun of him because of his name but, he has been nothing but nice. Thread is ended.

Be careful there, NZ. You are treading close to statements you don't want to make here. Judging someone purely on a name (in a game I might add), and saying what you have said is getting a little close to racial commentary. I for one do not approve of such behavior. Everyone is right, he hasn't done anything to prove he is a bad person, or has done anything wrong. We have a handful of members that have names which could be considered borderline, or beyond. If they have proven to be a nuisance, we rectify the situation. In this case, it has been ruled there is no wrong doing.
