What's your view on using the F3 scanner?

I've gotten mixed answers as to the legality of this, so I decided to put up a poll and see what everyone thought.

If you haven't tried it yet, you should note that when you press F3 to show coordinates, performance, FPS, etc., the game will show numbered tags over all of the mobs. In general, I use this 'scanner' function to find squid hiding in deep water, but in the past I've also used it to find caves near the surface by seeing the skeleton and zombie tags inside.
I was wondering what you all thought about the use of this feature. Would you consider it hacking or cheating or do you think it doesn't matter? I've gotten some spread out answers because it is built in to the game, and it certainly isn't as directly effective as x-ray mods or other hacks, but it is a cheap way to find caves. If any admins or mods could give their input, that would be helpful too.

You use it the same way I do. Mostly just for the squids though only after hearing them in water. Which means I'm close to them.

The only other time I may use it is when I'm at my home in PVP and just checking to make sure no slimes got into my house!

Heh, I didn't know about this. Yes, since it's built into the game, go for it. Kind of like using chunk errors to look for diamonds. Nothing we can do about it, even though it could be considered "cheating" by some.

I imagine once the game is out of beta, those things will be taken away anyhow. At least in MP.

I mentioned finding diamonds with chunk errors and Hac said I'd be banned if I did it.

Hac was wrong then. We discussed that whole situation a while ago, but it might have been before he was a part of the community.
