I wanted to grab some opinions on whether we should completely disable water/lava/TNT/Fire on the build server, to help alleviate griefing. Only cast a vote if you are a regular on the Build server!

Why wouldn't we disable TNT? it's only used for griefing. And fire is not neccessary, the only time it's actually used ok is when someone starts a forest fire to light up the area. And some people might call it griefing.

Well here's my tuppence, and my vote was to only disable TNT.

Water - Not often used for grieving, don't think its a great threat and even if it was used as one it is pretty easy to fix with a stack of dirt! People like to use it to make things look nice and they should be allowed to, also allowed to be used to for any type of farms which come in really useful very often.

Lava - Well it is a bit of a threat regarding grieving, but it's fairly easily fixed if you think about it, grab a stack of dirt and hit the sources, and when you have to run through lava it is slightly annoying but you have infinite health so there isn't much to complain about. People like to use it to make things that look cool and they should be allowed to, also it is used on obsidian farms which is really useful sometimes.

Fire - Not really too annoying, can burn wood in places and is non-trackable but I think that it really should not be disabled because it is a fair threat of grieving but can be used for pretty awesome things like fireplaces which I like to make :p

TNT - No need for it, quite hard to get but there is always the chance of hacking/duping and someone actually so determined to make enough TNT on the build server to grieve somewhere. No one really uses it and when they do its often used for grieving. As xanderh said it should be disabled to avoid grieving that bit more. I personally think this is the only one that should be disabled because there is no need for this and quite a threat of grieving.

TIP :p

For a fire place: it looks best on a stone floor with stone walls and a stone roof 3 blocks high. First get a log of wood and place it down, directly above the wood dig up the roof 2 more blocks; use 8 blocks of cobble to surround it on either side and on the corners as well. put glass on top of the cobble and another layer of cobble on-top of this glass. Set the log on fire and the fireplace should look great. I like to put a sofa and chairs near this as well just for the looks! :)

Before the beta update i would have said to disable tnt... BUT... now that tools degrade, and degrade rather fast... TNT is a great way to mine out and level terrain. Its the only practical way to create large areas underground now. really hope it isnt disabled, but lets just hope there are future mods to better restrict these materials from brand new people.

After taking into consideration Marine05's post, I realise that now after the tools upgrade being fixed TNT would be even more useful. I still think that as it is a cause of grieving, this being said I have come up with an idea that may be appealing for someone who actually wants the TNT for good reason, I would like to hear feedback as I have put a fair bit of thought into this so it is even for everyone, not sure how people will like it or not! :p

The idea would be for the crafting of TNT to be restricted (if possible, though the whole idea does revolve around this) but before this is done admins ect. people of SgtSpike's choosing would gather vast amounts of TNT to be stored in a maximum security hold. As the crafting itself of TNT would be restricted, some users would still want to get hold of TNT and they have just reason to do so (some of them at least, which is why this method would be implemented). Anyone with access to the hold (far far away, with private warps would get TNT on request of a user and exchange it for the materials used required to craft up some TNT. So the two parties would meet and the customer with a need for TNT would drop 4 blocks of sand and 5 pieces of sulphur (gunpowder) unto one of the chosen people who is online at the time. And then he/she would drop TNT unto the customer. There are many other variables that could be used as well like a signboard at spawn with all those who are dealers of TNT.

Please let me know what you think and if this could be plausible.

TNT is used for digging, ESPECIALLY now that tools wear out. It's very easy to get on the PVP server with a mob harvester. If you want to ban it on the build server, that's fine, since there's no reasonable way to get it over there, but don't ban it on PVP!

Sorry. That sounds ridiculous. If you're afraid of TNT, don't use it yourself. Griefing is already restricted.

 That's fine mate you don't have to apolagize, You're entitled to you'r own opinion and to be honest after thinking about it for a bit it sounded rather long winded and complicated. Maybe leaving it is fine as it is quite hard to acquire anyway and quite rare for someone to come home from a hard day at work and find their family standing outside the remains of their nice family home blown up!

I guess I'll let SgtSpike decide but I never really thought it would be used anyway :p

Lava, flint and tnt should be vip only
With plugins that work to control this.. also the fire not spreading and lava does not cause fires would be usefull

I agree with Kiwinz.

I've used flint to quickly get rid of trees in my area near pharos, although that was when leaves wouldn't die, so it took forever to clear them otherwise. Now that leaves die it wouldn't be quite as bad. Still, fire has its use. Lava I will be using, but only as a griefing deterrent, and that will only matter once it ends up in a PvP map, but I'd like to get the lava setup before I end up in PvP, because it will take a very long time to do (300-400 buckets of lava). TNT has very little use either way IMO. If I wanted to dig out a huge area quickly it might help, but other than that I can't see a use for it on a server with no damage.

TNT is incredibly rare on the build server, since mobs are turned off. Have to have had it in your inventory from long ago.
TNT is incredibly common on the PVP server. With a harvester you can crank out stacks and stacks of it. Sand becomes the scarce commodity, since you actually have to dig it. :)

Ok my two ideas for this:

1. Disable fire, tnt and lava for regulars, give VIPs and up access to them.

2. Create a 'builder' class. Non-regulars would not have anything (no tnt, lava, water or fire). Builders are trusted regulars and can have access to fire, water and lava. To become a builder you must have been playing for at least a week on the server and have two vips or mods vouch for you.

Too confusing.

This is all getting a little ridiculous now. I thought the whole intent of this server was to make it so that the server remains as vanilla minecraft as possible. C'mon guys, the main reason a lot of people are griefed is because they build too close to the spawn. It is well said by anyone on the server, if you build near the spawn you have a high chance of being griefed.
