Just curious, what do you all think about how often the map should be reset?

I suggested 3 months. Here's why-

1. Allows time for bigger, more time-comsuming projects to be able to take place. ( I have a few I'd like to do :p )
2. Provides players time to build their idea/project/whathaveyou, and consider changes that can be made. This doesn't always happen overnight.
3. Gives everyone time to explore each other's structures, which happens to give us ideas for other things we can do.
4. I would love to see some really, really big and intricate things on the server. Not talking about projects that will take a day or two, but maybe 2 weeks or more.

I still want to build my castle, I just didn't really find a truely suitable place on the current map :p :(

I say as long as possible, if you run into updates or map size issues, or maybe general overcrowded ugliness. The world is so large that you could move the spawn point away from everything a tun of times. Also, with the update of minecarts (hopefully) and hell (faster travel) the world will become smaller to travel.

I don't see a reason to reset any more than once ever 6 months or more, unless its required as above.

I voted for 3 months, because everyone else did.

Unless there's a major map issue. Then at nearest update.

Code:
if(map.age>=3||mapBugs())
{
     save();
     reset();
}
else
{
     getCrafty();
}

Here's something like that:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWPk5zlKAEM

SgtSpike suggested something like modern-day. Something recognizable. I think the biggest factor for impressive buildings is scale.

The earth project is really neat. My idea was to replicate a realworld town, one of those really small ones with population < 100. Problem is, someone would have to have access to said town IRL to take lots of detailed pictures so we could model it properly. But it would, most certainly, be epic.

Oh hai
Assuming the map doesn't get errors in it, we can always move spawn so the old stuff is still there. Of course, this is only between big updates. I think a complete reset is always a good idea with big updates.

Well, so far, it looks like we'll be keeping the same map for 3 months after this next update. :)

Yeah that's a neat project creating the world like that. I have a lot of patience, but I'm not sure I can do something to that scale haha.

I don't have a population of under 100 but I can do the small town picture stuff. I live out in the country so...but it would be really hard to replicate. This town is.. 130 yrs old? Something like that.

That might just work... ;)

Take some pictures and let's discuss whether it would be feasible. Post in the VIP forum though, this'll be a project I don't want potential griefers to have access to.

I agree with the majority consensus. Every three months, gives enough time to create epic projects but not too much time that everything loses its freshness.

Looks like every 3 months will be the new standard then (aside from any updates that might require a map reset), thanks for the votes and opinions all! This coming map will last a good long while then. :)

If an update in the future does require a map reset to utilize, I will initiate a vote here so we can decide whether it is worth an early map reset to include the new features.

Wait, what does this mean? :shock:

If I build a structure that takes me three months, is it just going to disappear into the ether? :cry:
That sounds extremely distressing, is that true? :?:

I know there is a way to backup parts of maps. Then the server can be rebuilt and the structure replaced.

Unfortunately it is a fact we have to resign ourselves to with an Alpha game's code being in such a constant state of change that our structure are only going to be here for a fleeting moment. This server however has a record of producing backups of previous maps, so if your dedicated enough to overcome some of the differences in single player (ie no /sethome or teleporting) you have the option to revisit your previous exploits. Personally I think you'll get used to the situation, and come to find starting fresh isn't such a bad thing, although it is a bit difficult to let go. :(

If you could save hours/days of your hard work, why wouldn't you?

I found an editor that will let you move structures between worlds (even older worlds to newer ones).
http://davidvierra.com/mcedit.html

Basically from what I can tell, you select the corners of the structure and it will copy everything in between. Then paste into the new map.

Here is the instruction thread on minecraftforum.net
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic ... 00#p806636

I told SgtSpike that I will donate 20$ if he could move my structures to the new map.

Well if it can be proven to not corrupt the map moving structures then I don't see why not, but you must also realize that this server is not SgtSpike's job and the demand for relocation structures is likely to be quite high. I can see this being a major drain on Spike's time inventorying buildings, scouting new locations, etc. when it seems to me he already has enough on his plate keeping up with keeping the server going.

I voted for "Whenever an update requires that the map be reset to use new items/blocks/features" which is now tied with every 3 months. I think it's better to reset only when forced to, because I personally, and I'm sure other people feel the same way, do not like the idea of losing everything after 3 months.

Given that the votes are now nearly matched, we will revisit this subject come 3 months down the road, or when an update requires it, whichever comes first, and take another vote to see how people are feeling at that point. We certainly have some epic projects on this map!
