Shops and Economy

Hey guys. I've been playing the Build server for a week or so now and I thought of a suggestion for the server.

The last server I was playing used the "Iconomy" plugin which, to me, seemed to add allot to the game. For people that haven't heard of Iconomy before, It's a plugin that adds Currency to the game and the ability for the admins to build shops where players can buy and sell blocks and objects. This means that things like Farming and growing plants [like sugar and Cactus] have a purpose, as they can be sold at the shop for cash, which can in turn be used to buy items you need. It also includes functions that allow you to send money to other players so you can buy items directly.

Obviously this would take time for the owner of the server to set up, but it's just an idea. I offer my own services to help in building the shop if this idea gets taken on board though!

Just wanted to see how many people would be interested in this. =)

We like to keep the server as vanilla as possible. The idea of an economy has been brought up before. If it really means that much to you, make it so slime balls are the form currency on the server.

I've toyed with the idea of adding iConomy to the server, but as Frothing said, we try to keep things as close to vanilla as possible, and iConomy is definitely a big step away from that identity. I appreciate the input though, and if many players are interested, we'll more seriously consider the addition.

I like the idea of a slime-ball currency. Maybe you could set up a rate like 2 slimeballs are worth to the equivalent of 1 diamond etc...

We don't need iconomy for that, thats simple =)

I just have a question about this iconomy thing.. so I get that it adds a type of currency to the game, but are the items in the stores spawned into the game, or is it just playing with what people collect and put into them. If nothing is spawned, I see no problem with a type of universal currency, but I dont see why it would actually be used when we could just trade for useful items. To start a new currency, people need to have faith in that currency and know that it will always have worth, and I dont know how many people would actually believe in that. I think we would have better luck at digging up that trading conversion thing

Items are spawned, not 'traded'.

I've thought about iConomy too, but the issue is it just inflates the economy. You end up with people just growing tons of reeds, for example, then just trading them in for shedloads of diamonds. The value of diamonds goes down and everything gets screwed up.

A true economy plugin would have a "store" where items that are up for sale are placed via a chat command. Other players could browse the store inventory, and purchase with a command, but they could only purchase items that are actually in the store's inventory.

Exactly Spike, Until something like that exists we should definitely hold off on any economy plugins. Spawning Items would be no good, and goes against our servers main principle of everything being 'legit'

Items are not spawned, how iConomy works is one: You sell items for prices set buy the admin. The amount you sell to the store is added to that items amount in-game, if nobody has sold any of some item, then you cannot buy that item until someone sells it to the store. Nothing is spawn, the store i like a great BIG chest that you trade with...

Haha, serious rage factor would be involved there.

It'd be neat if it was a constantly fluctuating market... in other words, if there was no inventory of a particular item in the store, the value of that item would slowly rise up. Then when someone finally sold the item to the store, the price would drop down for sellers (but the buy price would still remain higher than the original purchase price by the store). You get the idea. Would require some fine-tuning and maybe some cron jobs or something, but it'd be fun.

I would extremely want something similar to a shop system, also jobs would be cool for in-game currency system. =
