The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (on MinecraftCC!)

Hi all,
Marine's Hanging Gardens of Babylon got me thinking. What if we had all 7 wonders of the ancient world on out Creative world. I think it would be a pretty cool project to undertake. I can't actually start work on the project till I get back from holiday, but if you'd like to be involved let me know by posting in this thread. One thing people can start work on would be to explore the world and find suitable locations for each thing.

What we need to build -

The Great Pyramid of Giza - Built for Pharaoh Khufu, the largest of the three extant pyramids at Giza. We already have this built (as well as the two smaller ones) it seems from the dynmap.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon - A wonder of engineering and agriculture, it existed in what is now Iraq. @Marine0r31 has this built already.

Temple of Artemis at Ephesus - Built by the Greeks in what is now Turkey, a very large traditional Greek style temple, funnily enough it was burnt down by Herostratos, a man who wanted to be remembered for destroying something great, in many ways this makes him histories first recorded Griefer (unless you count the devil :p) -

Should be a moderately easy build, thinking maybe oliverw92 for this one thanks to his temple in Games world. Anyone else is welcome to apply.

Each column should be 19 blocks high in our Minecraft world. If to scale it should be 115x55 blocks.

Statue of Zeus at Olympia - Built by the Greeks at Olympia, the site of the Ancient olympic games, this is a large statue of Zeus.

Only 12m tall in real life, this is likely too small to replicate to scale. I think Wombatus could be a good match for this building thanks to it's similarities with his statue of Crom. I am thinking about the same size as Crom so it's nice and impressive.

Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - A Persian building built to house the body of Mausolus, a governor in the Persian Empire. If built to scale (not neccesary) it should be around 45 blocks high.

@Marine0r31 would be a good match for this one, though almost anyone could build it, myself included if need be. Would be nice to try to match the detailing in this picture.

Colossus of Rhodes - A statue of the Greek Titan Helios, it was built on the Greek island of Rhodes. It was built using brass plates attatched to an iron structure. Copper plate texture would probably be an ideal facing material.

I think a burning torch in his hand would be nice. If built to scale it should be 45 blocks high, though to get appropriate detailing it could be adjusted to be higher if need be. I think this will be by far the hardest building to complete, getting a humanoid form this complex with just blocks is hard. I am thinking maybe @RAT418 thanks to his work on Angel Tempere, but anyone is welcome to give it a go. We may need to give him some pants or a fig leaf depending on the Artists impression you use!

Lighthouse of Alexandria - The final structure was built on the island of Pharos at Alexandria in Egypt, our version should also be on a small-ish island (natural or terraformed in). In real life it is estimated as being over 120m tall, so if to scale it would be too tall to fit in the sky limit. We could reduce it by 50-60% or just build it by eye.

PharosofAlexandria_.jpg
Our island would obviously need to look less fake. I think I would like to build this one, but if someone else really would like to do it then feel free to ask.

Well that's it!
Hope people will be interested in helping me with these projects, I think we could possibly get some good publicity out of this on Youtube if we do it well enough!

Just to note, the Hanging Gardens were built to scale as much as possible. The base was built with dimensions discovered by the uncovered ruins in Al Hillah, Iraq, and the rest was designed by me based off of a mix of different ancient pictures of what it was said to look like. The Great Pyramid was also designed by me. I wanted this to be built to scale as well but the actual pyramid stood about 146 meters tall. Even if I started from bedrock It would not have been possible.. Also, the two adjacent pyramids locations were changed to allow for them to all be visible at once (view distance set to far,) as they are in Giza. This being said, I would like to see all these structures built to scale where possible, and set into a similar themed city to show the true awe that these structures inspired.

Also, if you look on island of Babylon in creative, I also have the 8th wonder built (It was originally one of the 7, but got bumped off the list in the 6th century by the Lighthouse of Alexandria,) the Ishtar Gate. A large gate marking one of the entrances to Babylon covered in blue glazed tiles and golden mosaic lions.

If you can't tell, I would be all for this project, and have already started. The Lighthouse of Alexandria will be the next additions around Babylon as it was near Egypt. Im undecided if the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus should be built there as well. It is Persian but seems it might fit in better with the Roman buildings. It would be nice if another island could be started with Romanesque architecture for the other wonders and some of the other great pieces of architecture that came out of that period. We need someone else to head up the Roman city to decide on blocks allowed in the theme and to keep it on track as well as setup the layout. It would be nice to have this as another telepad site as well.

I fancy heading up the greek/roman island - shotgun the temple!

I really like this idea. Maybe some of them should wait until the map is dropped though?

Agreed about waiting^ being dropped wouldnt help the pyramids, but most of my structures barely fit..and they were short in comparison.
We just need to wait for someone to get on top of shutting down the creative map and lowering it.^^^ not gonna name any names here^^^ jk, this project will take time, no need to rush, but it should be lowered early to avoid people building low and risk being cut off.

I'm waiting for SgtSpike :p We need to get a GPU sorted for the server. Either that or we will have to shut down Creative for 24 hours so I can download the map, mcedit it, relight it then upload it again.

I like the idea of the wonders all around the world. Makes people explore the map.

For Artemis Temple you should plan 38 columns and 230*110 scale (so you could have a chance to make the statues at the entrence) :p And the Colossus has the hand open so no torch in it. He makes an antic salute (stolen to the greeks and romans by the germans in 1933, what about a red thing on his left arm ? just kidding).

And for my help well, I have a very very huge project already started, but I can be a consultant ^^ And if I succeed at making my project and if there is still some wonders to do I'll be there !

Sounds like an awesome project. Would make for a great youtube vid too!

Oli, what about me just giving you access to a different computer that already has a GPU installed and has the server drive mapped? I would think mcedit would work with a map over a mapped drive just fine, especially over a gigabit connection (yay new router)... How long do you think it will take?

Should be able to do it tonight (12 hrs from now, give or take). I think the computer that is running Terraria already has proper directX, etc installed, so I'll probably use that one. And it has 3 GPU's, which should be enough for MCEdit. :p

Will you still be online that late?

12 hrs from now is 5am :p Just set it up and install McEdit, then drop me the details. I can do it tomorrow :)

I think we could make a huge exploring/adventure game in Creative for the non-builder players, for exemple we could make some hidden area under (or in) each wonder with treasure or something in it. A sort of Indiana Jones mod ^^ with lost temples, lava pit and dangerous bridge with arrows dispensers in dark caves. With the seven Wonders you already have seven potentials areas all over the map, to find and explore.

Thanks for stopping by, nice advice!
The colossus, well I can't find any artists impressions that are the same, some have torches as a sort of beacon, some have outspread hands, others straddle a harbour entrance. I like that one though as it's a little more mysterious (Hitler associations aside - Germans y u no be inventive).
I am frankly not much good at humans (see sphinx at vegas) I can give it a go, easy enough to remove with worldedit if it sucks :p

As I said theres plenty of time, just wanted to get my thoughts down before I forget. I am in two minds as to whether we should try and locate them geographically or as Wombatus said to have them spread around the world to 'discover'. Some of the buildings clearly fit into Babylon though.

I knew this would be right up your street :)
I also really like the idea of a Roman island (hopefully a quite large one). Oli can feel free to start it, if he manages to get any free time with our many demands on his time :D.

I really like this idea. With pistons we can have some truly hidden entrance, with a hidden switch or button somewhere secret. We don't necessarily even need a mod, with some clever redstone it could all be reset afterwards.

About the hidden passages, If you walk into the Main pyramid you will see this already started, some passages are blocked off for the time being as to not give away everything to the random explorers. Im also in support of this^

Oh man, if I get approved to be a builder on Creative, I would love to build something huge and Egyptian. I'm currently trying to finish my application piece.. I should be done within the next day or two.

Do you think perhaps I could contribute something awesome, such as your ideas? D:

Sure, any help will be appreciated :D
This does need organisation though, we don't want people beginning things without saying here first, then we'll have too many wonders :p
As wom, marine and oli said we shouldn't start work until the map can be lowered, as that will make these things even more impressive!

While I wanted to build it near babylon, this might be a better idea if we are going to do the "treasure hunt" type of thing at a later point^ only now i need to find more epic structures that were around egypt, I was looking forward to the lighthouse. About the treasure hunt thing...we could also make it like a scavenger hunt around the map with market signs giving them an item from a certain location. Should also keep exact locations out of public forums as well
