Okay I don't know who has been on the server for a long time, but when the server 1st came out there was a rule that said that there would be a new map every 3 months. It has been 8 months since the last server map reset. No one is wanting to make a town with people but they rather move way out to a random cord and make an epic house for no one to see. I think that people are leaving the server because there is really nothing to do on the build map any more there are almost no new towns. I know people put a lot of time and effort on making there buildings but really we all have seen them like 100 times. I think it's time to see some new things on this server. Who is with me??

GOOD Reasons (Bellow)
1. Getting a new map every so often keeps things fresh and interesting, makes the world not feel so stale.
2. People are more likely to work together if there are resets because you no longer have an "infinite" amount of time in which to work on projects.
3. People will probably focus on building more nice things, instead of spamming projects that never get finished.
4. It keeps the map relevant, instead of making it a server wide ghostville.

Q:"But what's the point?! My stoofs is just gonna dissapear".
A: The point is that now every few months you would get a chance to show everyone what you can do if given a fresh start, your building skills will constantly be on display.

Statement: "I've spent so much time I don't wanna lose what I am working on!!"
Counter Statement/answer: Think back on all the projects you have ever done, you probably have TONS of projects that you either no longer care about, or you long ago abandoned, eventually it will be the same with your current project. Getting a new map keeps peoples work relevant over and over again.

Long post incoming, my sincerest apologies.

After reading DrMadFellow and FrothingLuck's views, I'm gonna play the total hypocrite and flip flop on my earlier points. I think having a completely new map might be nice for a change. Yeah, I would be pretty upset to lose all of my projects, but starting over can be nice as well. I would also hate to lose all of the public warps, as one of the coolest perks of being VIP is just seeing everything people have made (where it's far less likely to be griefed).
Or just for nostalgia's sake/the lulz, we move the spawn point back to old spawn and see how it goes. I for one would love to see people using I-95/Newport/all the old towns again.

I'm split on Oliver's idea. I would like to see the first 2 of his points implemented in a new map, but as Frothing said, I don't care for having a specific VIP only build zone as I can think of several people off the top of my head who are non-vip but are FAR better builders than I could ever hope to be. Also, I agree that I rather like the very lightly organized chaos that has been both spawns.

Simply as an idea, what about instead of making a single area VIP only, we instead setup plots in certain areas around spawn, which would range from small (ex. 15x15) to enormous (ex. 250x250). These could then be used instead for:

1. Reserved areas for people to build really awesome stuff (like Oli said), but we make it open for anyone and with an application process.
Ex. Someone wants to build a giant ninja eating a bullshark out of gold blocks, but they want to do so in one of these reserved areas (which may be blocked from griefing, much like Spawn is), and they want it near spawn so people will see it (which is why they chose one of these areas). They then go on the forum, and under possibly a build subforum, write a detailed post on what they want to build, how they'll build it, how many materials it will take, they prove that they already possess all the materials for the project, who will help them, why they want to build it, what it will be used for, etc. Then either the community, or just VIP+ vote on whether to allow or deny the project.

2. Areas to copy over select projects from the old (our current) map for anyone to see, and in a way that they would be ungriefable. This idea has the major flaw though that EVERYONE will want to have their stuff copied. For something like this, it would again be a community vote, and I think largely it would be VIP+ projects from the old (our current) map that were built very far from spawn to prevent griefing. In other words, sort of like making certain public warps open for everyone to see as they'll be moved next to spawn.
As an example, I would love to see Pharos copied over and placed somewhere near the spawn point. Nothing would make me happier than to read the chat feed filled with people quaking in fear at the grandeur and magnificence that is Pharos. And of course, to give them the chance to walk through it and possible soil their pants.
These copied over items would possible just be very large builds though, and would be placed in large sections within maybe 1000 blocks of spawn.

3. Similar to 1, possibly just areas for large towns? Though I don't much care for living in other people's towns either, it would be interesting to see what might spring up.

4. There is no point 4.

Anyways, sorry for the wall of words guys. This is just some of the ideas I've been thinking about.

I voted No. Even if there was a new map, no one would build any sort of "town" aside from what we've already seen. The cooler building are far away to avoid grief most of the time, and if people wanted other players to see said structures they could easily ask for a public warp to be made.

I personally don't want to lose all the progress on the projects I've been working on for months because of reasons which don't quite add up. Like the fact that there is no active towns, What is there really to do in a town? Build a house - This is build therefore you are done, There is no surviving anything therefore nothing has to be done with that house post-build.

And the random coords? Well, part of that is to effectively grief proof the house by making it inaccessible by normal means, if people wanted you to see their homes or structures, as said before, they could ask for a warp to be made.

As for the "we've all seen it 100 times", Making a new map wouldn't make us unsee anything, If they built it again we still would've seen it for the 101st time, There is nothing different about a new map other than the similar structure wouldn't exist.

I voted no only because I feel we've all invested far too much into build to start over again. I'd rather see spawn moved again with a new area, than to have a completely fresh slate.

When we originally only had the one map, I think it did become necessary to wipe everything occasionally in order to keep both the map size small because of server hardware constraints, but also to keep things "fresh and new" (for lack of a better phrase). What with our current multiworld setup though, we have so many more play options available to us, and build has become just another area for people to explore, and less of "the only place to play" as it used to be.

I'm up to hearing others thoughts on this, though.

Were you on the very 1st mad at all? We had built tons of way cooler things on that map and when the 3 months was up we lost it all and had to start over fresh and no one complained.

No, just barely pre-halloween I think. All I'm really getting at is that build is no longer the sole map like it used to be; I'd rather see it grow old and fat (lulz) than to completely replace it.

I'm out, come find me elsewhere.
I hate these topics because I want a new map SOOOOO badly, but people cry too much when it's mentioned, so it will never happen.

I'm sort of tied on this. I'm completely with DrMadFellow. Its always nice starting from the very beginning. I'm one of the only few whole love the temp maps. Its always cool seeing what other people come up with. I'm all for a fresh map but I do also like going to /warp oldspawn to kind of nostalgia a little bit. So I vote yes for a new server map but I'm okay if it doesn't go through. And in all honesty, I don't build structures for others to see. I build structures because its fun. As for what Jacca said about towns. I have been saying this since day 1. There is no reason to build in a town. Towns have rules and codes, what put rules in a free build form game like minecraft? Just some food for thought.

I like the current map. Just move spawn if it becomes a problem. But, I do need to point out people's apparent lack of comprehension of time.

Why do you children think the server has been around this long? Based on the quoted statement you believe the server has been around longer than a year. This is false.

There's an old saying, and Spike has said it before about other things: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I see why the map needs to be reset due to file size, but now that maps are saved differently, the map would need to be 50 times bigger than what it is now to match the previous file size.

If it did happen, I wouldn't BAWWW until I bled out of my eyes like some people might, but as long as I get time to collect my resources from the buildings in Olympus Cove, I don't mind the map changing.

i could go either way seeing as i have given up build (i hope we are talking just about build) but i voted no becasue people have put in too much effort for it to be destroyed.

Wrong, the map is still the same size. It never changed. The size of individual files inside the map changed, however.

Here is my opinion on the matter.

I now think we should have gone to a completely new map instead of just moving spawn when we did so a couple of months ago. It would have meant a completely fresh start.

However I don't think we did the current spawn point right. We didn't set it up with proper allocated plots, there were no building regulations etc. It just ended up with the spawn getting really ugly.

Here is what i propose:

We go to a completely new build map. However the moderators and *maybe* some vips spend a good week or two sorting a proper building infrastructure at the spawn point:
  • Spawn castle as it is now, maybe a few small changes
  • Outer walls like we have now, but all on one layer (not over a hill)
  • A VIP only build zone with proper marked out plots surrounding the spawn. There will be entry and leave messages telling non-vips that they are in a vip-build only area.
  • A large, well designed train station in this vip zone that has good support for many branches that anyone can use. This can be linked up to towns, projects etc. Moderators will be in charge of connecting it up.
  • There would be a wall around the vip zone
  • Outside of the vip wall would be plots that anyone can claim and build on.
I would then say that if we did the spawn point properly, we should not have to go to a new map for a VERY long time.

Personally I like the sporadic look at the junk that everyone has built look that is current with our spawn. I think adding order to the chaos makes us too much like a evil server. You can only do this thing, a certain way within certain limits. I just feel this isn't the correct way to go. Also, just because someone is a VIP doesn't neccesarily mean they are better builders. For example, RAT is NonVIP but builds way better structures than me. You will still have the choatic look of our current spawn. Just some food for thought.

I have voted no for a new map on build. I have spent alot of time on build and just now as I right this I realized my fault. I always wanted to build something great and grand, and did so with labyrinth. Although now I realize I should have put my efforts in to spawn then starting something new like labyrinth. Spawn is not all bad thou. There are some beautiful buildings in and around spawn. I am looking forward to working around build spawn in the future. What I think would be totally awesome is to ingrate some of our old maps as additional worlds. Or maybe just one here and there. I know some of them were corrupted, but it is possible that Notch has better built-in corruption detection now, to where those maps could be mostly repaired and used.

Thinking mostly of the very first world, with Varg's epic castle, and the map right before the current one, which I guess was... a while ago. :p

But I voted no on a completely new map. Maybe yes to moving spawn. I still don't see the point of a new map vs moving spawn though... there's still plenty of completely unexplored land that we could move the spawn near, and it would take hours to reach anything that has been explored. Is it just the idea of a completely fresh world that people like?
